Gilgit-Baltistan, formerly known as Pakistan’s Northern Areas, is the country’s northernmost administrative territory. It is bordered on the south by Azad Kashmir, on the west by Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, on the north by the Wakhan Corridor of Afghanistan, on the east and northeast by Xinjiang, China, and on the southeast by Jammu and Kashmir. The territory is disputed by India, China, and Pakistan, together with Azad Kashmir, Aksai Chin, China’s Shakshagam Valley, and Jammu and Kashmir. The Japanese have given the cherry blossom the name Skura, which means “cherry blossom.” The arrival of the Cherry Blossom (Sakura) heralds the end of Hunza’s frigid winter season. Cherry Blossom Hunza is only open from March 15 until April 30. The bloom’s stay is brief, but it is rich and gorgeous.
