The key garrison of Rohtas Fort is located near the modern city of Jhelum in northeast Pakistan. It was built by Afghan ruler Sher Shah Suri along the so-called “ancient route” that connects the north and the Punjab plains in order to prevent the deposed Mughal Emperor Humayan from returning to his former country. Sher Shah Suri had defeated Humayan at Chausa and escaped to Iran, but he was apprehensive that if he returned to Punjab, Humayan’s restoration might be feasible.
