The origin of Sikh has its roots in Nankana Sahib. The founder of the Sikh faith, Guru Nanak Dev, was born here in 1469. The place-name was Rai Bhoi di Talwandi at the time. Rai Bular, Guru Nanak Dev’s contemporary landlord, was a disciple of the Guru himself. It was renamed after Guru Nankana.
It’s roughly 75 kilometers west-southwest of Lahore, in what’s known as the Nilianwali Bar (a forest where nilgais abound). Nankana Sahib is located in the Sheikhupura district and is connected to the district town by train and road. There are a number of shrines here dedicated to Guru Nanak’s childhood and early years.
