The 60-kilometer-long Biafo Glacier and the 61-kilometer-long Hispar Glacier merge at the 5151-meter-high Hispar Pass to form one of the world’s longest glacial systems outside of the polar regions. This ice roadway connects Hunza in the west with Baltistan in the east, two ancient mountain kingdoms.
Snow Lake, a basin of ice (16 km. wide) surrounded by granite pinnacles yet to be climbed, lies at the base of Hispar Pass on its eastern flank.
Glaciologists have carried out numerous studies on the lake and found the ice to be around 1.6 km deep.
