Shimshal (3100 M) is the Hunza Valley’s most remote area, bordering China in Gojal, and access to Karakorum Highway at Passu Village by jeep-enabled road. Shimshal’s inhabitants are Wakhi, speak Wakhi, and have a unique culture and customs. Because of the distance and difficult accessibility, much of their heritage and culture has survived.
Every year in May, the villagers of Shimshal transport their livestock to the high pastures of the Pamir for gazing from May until October.
During these five months, they look after their yaks, sheep, and goats, gathering butter, cheese, and yeast for their families during the severe winter season.
