Nanga Parbat is made up of a series of 20-kilometer-long peaks and ridges that culminate in a massive ice crest (8.125 m). The South Face, also known as the Rupal Face, is 5,000 meters high, while the North Face, also known as the Raikot Face, is one of the world’s deepest gorges, tumbling down (7,000 meters) from the top to the Indus River. It was first climbed in 1953 by a joint Austrian-German expedition. Hermann Buhl completed the last ascent after a tortuous 41-hour solo journey without oxygen. Reinhold Messner, an Italian mountaineer, and his brother Gunther climbed the Diamir Face’s south face (Rupal Face) in 1970. Only five southerly ascents have been recorded so far.
