Shimshal Valley lies east of Hunza, hidden in rugged mountains, glaciers and high passes, making it the Karakorum range’s most remote inhabited area. In 1936 it was named “the most remote settlement in the Empire,” by the British political agent in Gilgit. It still holds a similar status today.
The upper valleys are good for hikers and mountaineers, however, like many other portions of the Karakorum, this area has yet to be thoroughly explored.
After a brief jeep ride from Passu on a small jeep track created by the Shimshalis, the three-day walk winds through a tight valley that widens at Shimshal.
The brave, well acclimatized will cross Chapchingal Pass (5150 m) down to Kuksel Stream and back down to Khunjerb Pass on the Karakoram Highway.
